Subject: Gjesteforelesning onsdag 26.11., kl 12, store aud
Jeg har gleden å invitere dere til en gjesteforelsning i INF3160/4160
Operativsystemer. Forelesningen med tittelen
Porting Linux to the zSeries
holdes av
Ulrich Weigand
Onsdag 26.november 2003, 12:15 - 13:15
i Store Aud på IFI.
Abstract
The port of Linux to zSeries host computers led to a largely unexpected
business success of the zSeries. Linux on zSeries supports the 64 bit
architecture in real and virtual mode on zSeries servers. ZSeries servers
make is possible to run several instances of Linux, z/OS, z/VM, TPF or
VSE/ESA side-by-side on the same machine. Businesses realize the
possibilities for simplified management and consolidation in server rooms
and replace several servers with a S/390 or zSeries machine. Existing
S/390 installations benefit from the availability of many new applications
from the Linux world.
In his lecture, Dr. Ulrich Weigand will present the port of Linux to the
zSeries. He will focus on the differences between the zSeries architecture
and other architectures that Linux has been ported to earlier. He will in
particular consider the differences in device handling and in code
generation. In the spirit of the operating system course that invites to
this guest lecture, the audience can expect to learn many technical
details of the port.
About the guest lecturer
Dr. Ulrich Weigand studied Informatics at the Friedrich-Alexander
University Erlangen-Nuernberg in Germany. After receiving his diploma
degree, he worked as a research assistant at the chair for theoretical
computer science and received his doctoral degree in 2000. Since then he
works for IBM Germany on the development of Linux for the zSeries, with a
particular focus on the adaptation of the GNU compiler.
